What do you know about saffron?

Well, let me fill you in about this thread-like spice! It comes from the Crocus sativus, which is a cousin of my favorite flower…..the Lily!

What is saffron made of?

The main antioxidants in saffron are crocin, picrocrocin, and safranal. Saffron also contains compounds called kaempferol and crocetin.  First, the crocin is what gives saffron its color.  Then the picrocrocin is what gives saffron its taste, which is known to be slightly bitter!  Safranal is what gives saffron its scent.  Kaempferol is found in the saffrons petals and the crocetin forms the core of the crocin, therefore, it is also responsible for the color of the saffron thread.

Saffron is handpicked, making it so expensive, 1 pound can cost anywhere from $500 – $5,000!

Saffron has many medical benefits!  Its known benefits are: increasing libido, improving memory, improving mood, reducing PMS symptoms, and helps to increase weight loss (by helping to curb the appetite!) you can see why people are willing to spend money on it!

Saffron is a powerful antioxidant, helping to protect your cells against dangerous free radicals and oxidative stress!

Called the sunshine spice, it is known to help people with depression!

Saffron is also linked to helping heart health, lowering cholesterol, in addition to being an anti-inflammatory, and aiding with digestive troubles, along with helping to prevent nervous system disorders!

People will drink saffron milk or saffron tea, they can take supplements in the form of pills/capsules as well.
